Notes From a Recent Planning Session
Last month we sat down with the production team at a large pulse processing facility outside Melbourne. The agenda was straightforward: they had just taken delivery of a second optical sorter and wanted to talk through how it would slot into the existing line without forcing them to slow down the packaging side.
What came out of that session was less about the machine itself and more about the sequence of decisions around it. The facility runs three shifts, and the new sorter was meant to handle the overflow from the older unit. But the real constraint turned out to be the elevator that feeds both machines. It was already running near capacity, and adding another intake point meant either upgrading the elevator or rethinking the buffer silo between cleaning and sorting.
We spent most of the afternoon mapping the flow on paper. The team knew their numbers well, but the conversation kept returning to the same point: the sorter is only as good as the product presentation it receives. If the feed is uneven or the product has too much foreign material, the machine spends its time rejecting rather than grading. That is not a fault of the optics; it is a question of what happens upstream.
The practical outcome was a short list of adjustments. First, they agreed to install a small distribution hopper above the new sorter to smooth out the feed. Second, we talked through the air pressure settings for the ejectors, because the older unit had been running with a profile tuned for a different crop. Third, they decided to run a side-by-side trial for two weeks, comparing reject rates between the old and new units before committing to a full changeover.
None of this was dramatic. It was the kind of planning that happens quietly, where the value is in asking the right questions before the line stops. The notes from that session are now the basis for their commissioning checklist, and we will be back on site in a few weeks to review the trial data.
